Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Thanh Hoa) is a 'pocket Sa Pa' four hours' drive from Hanoi. Trails link Don, Hieu and Kho Muong villages across terraces, bamboo waterwheels and primary rainforest up to the 1,700 m Pu Luong summit. This is home ground for the Vietnam Jungle Marathon. Rice ripens in June and October; the July–August wet season is thick with leeches.
