Overview

The gateway trail run for Hanoi's running community. Nothing technical – village concrete, dirt paddy dykes and one stone staircase – but the setting is a World Heritage site: limestone towers rising straight out of rice fields, the Ngo Dong river winding between them and sampans drifting below. The highlight is the 500 steps to Hang Mua at sunrise, before the tour groups arrive. Run it in May–June when the rice is golden or in January–February when mist hangs over the water. Entirely free (apart from the Hang Mua ticket) and 90 minutes from Hanoi.
