Overview
The Cat Ba crossing is the most adventurous route within two hours of Hai Phong: tropical rainforest growing straight out of razor karst, sections where you haul over boulders with your hands, the mysterious freshwater marsh of Frog Lake deep in the forest, and a rare chance to see the Cat Ba langur – a primate down to about 80 individuals. The goal is Viet Hai, an isolated village reached only by boat, where you eat seafood before sailing back to Ben Beo across Lan Ha Bay. Summer is ferociously hot and humid – MONT recommends starting before 7 am and avoiding June–August altogether.

Route
198 GPS pointsKm 0–1.6: steps up towards Ngu Lam peak (optional +1 km detour to the top). Km 1.6–6.1: path over karst pinnacles, a few hands-on moments, down to Frog Lake. Km 6.1–10.4: dense primary forest, mud, gradual descent to Viet Hai. Km 10.4–12.7: concrete lane through the village to the pier.

Elevation
560 m up, 600 m down over a sawtooth of limestone ribs. No single long climb, but constant 30–80 m ups and downs.
Weather
85–95 % humidity year-round. Summer 33–35 °C in windless forest – heat stroke is a real risk. Winter 12–18 °C is pleasant but drizzle makes the rock slick.
How to get there
From Hai Phong: bus plus ferry or speedboat to Cat Ba (1.5–2 h). Bus or motorbike taxi from Cat Ba town to the park gate, 12 km. Return from Viet Hai by boat to Ben Beo (45 min) then 2 km by motorbike taxi to town.

Water sources
No potable water on the whole route. Carry 2 litres in the cool season, 3 in the hot. Viet Hai has shops.
Food
Nothing in the forest. Viet Hai: grilled grouper, fried squid, rice (150,000–250,000 ₫/person). Buy snacks in Cat Ba town beforehand.

Camping
No camping in the national park. Viet Hai homestays (200,000–400,000 ₫) are very quiet and rent bicycles.
Safety
Karst is razor-sharp – gloves recommended; a fall onto rock means deep cuts. Snakes (cobra, pit viper) and leeches in the wet season. Heat stroke is the biggest summer risk. Easy to lose the trail around Frog Lake – follow the park's red-painted markers.

Save the local contacts before you lose signal. Tell someone your route and turnaround time.
Best season
October–April. November–December is driest and coolest. Avoid June–August.
Equipment
Stiff-soled trail shoes, gloves, 2–3 litres of water, electrolyte salts, hat, insect repellent, cash for the boat (no ATM in Viet Hai).
